Welcome to Colchester
Colchester is located in Mid Essex, fifty miles from London and has a population of over 181,000, largely living in the main urban areas of Colchester, Marks Tey, Tiptree, Mersea Island and Wivenhoe . The borough is also comprised of a number of suburban areas around these main urban areas and many villages, within a rural setting.
The main source of air pollution in the borough is road traffic emissions from major roads, notably the A12, A133, A134, A1232, Brook Street and Mersea Road.
Colchester Borough Council has declared two Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs).
1: Mersea Road
2: Brook Street
Other pollution sources, including commercial, industrial and domestic sources, also make a contribution to background pollution concentrations.
